How to Dress for Your Workouts (and why it matters)
What you wear to work out matters because it influences your MINDSET and IDENTITY around exercise. 🧠
I used to hit the gym in clothing that had been rejected from my wardrobe. Leggings that didn’t quite fit… a shirt with a hole in it. That’s cost effective, sure… but it’s terrible for forming a confident identity as someone who takes their workouts seriously. (This is me giving you permission to buy some cute workout clothes! 😋)
Think about it. Why would I dress for my workouts like they are the least important thing in my life, when exercise is actually one of my top priorities? That just doesn’t make sense. My exercise routine is the foundation for the rest of my healthy lifestyle, and my workout classes set the tone for the rest of my day. This deserves respect and intention!
It doesn’t matter if you exercise at home, go to the gym, or a fitness studio. The way you dress will directly impact how much confidence, energy and effort you bring to your workout. 🏋️
You know how people say “dress for the job you want, not the job you have?” It’s the same concept. Showing up as the type of person you want to become, and looking the part, tells your brain that you are someone who takes their fitness and their health seriously. Not to mention once I have a cute gym outfit on, I’m already feeling more motivated. (This is the cue part of how habits are formed!)
Do NOT wait until you have lost weight to buy workout apparel that fits you. You deserve to feel good exercising at your current size! (Plus, workout clothes are stretchy and will still fit for a while even if you lose/gain a few lbs.)
Don’t believe me? Try it both ways. Wear an old baggy t-shirt one day, and the next try dressing for your workout like someone who takes their fitness seriously—in clothing that was designed for exercise. It can be as modest or as sexy as you like! This is personal and you can (and should) make it fun 🤩
Dress for the part, “act as if” and watch yourself transition into the kind of person you admire (or are a bit jealous of 😈).
No need to spend a fortune on this stuff either. I get my cute fits at Target, Marshalls, TJ Maxx and of course… Amazon.
Rooting for you always,
Coach Gretchen

P.S. My 2025 workout routine is a powerhouse combo of floor Pilates, barre, & cardio kickboxing when I’m Upstate… and F45 Training when I’m in NYC or traveling 🔥
